Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Hiatus Kaiyote bandleader Nai Palm is among Australia’s greatest musical talents. Accompanied only by backing vocals and intricate guitars, her silky voice—rich and full-bodied at times, extraordinarily delicate at others—is gloriously exposed on her solo debut. Needle Paw features originals, covers, and new Hiatus Kaiyote arrangements (including “Atari” and “Molasses,” sampled by Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak, respectively), spectacularly peaking with a dizzying nine-minute medley of David Bowie’s “Blackstar”, Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song” and “Breathing Underwater,” followed by an intimate take on “Borderline with My Atoms.” This album is, simply, flawless.
