Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Live (1972/2019) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

In 2001, fans of Marvin Gaye discovered a live album of their idol, which had been recorded on May 1, 1972 at the Kennedy Center in Washington as a bonus to the deluxe edition of What's Going On, released a year earlier, in May 1971.

In October 2019, this magnificent concert had the right to an autonomous release, and above all to a remastering and to a version in Hi-Res 24-bit quality. The singer at that time is at a turning point in his career.

Since he cannot overcome the death of his accomplice Tammi Terrell, who blesses the temporal in 1970 with only 24 years due to cancer, Marvin Gaye withdraws from the business and sinks into depression. But the music quickly brings him back. While America struggles with its own, internal (racial conflicts) and external (Vietnam) demons, it creates a consciously soulful masterpiece. Released on the Motown label, What's Going On is full of politically engaged lyrics that confront the sweet American Dream with the reality of its time.

But the primarily poetic entertainer Marvin Gaye delivers a political address enlivened by Groove like no other. A masterful, cleverly dosed symphony in which rhythm, strings and choral singing put us into hypnosis. However, this is precisely the foundation of America's black music, which could not be easily exposed, so much so that Motown boss Berry Gordy feared that this quite political work could harm the quite positive image of his label and his protégé. Marvin Gaye forces Gordy to confront the Vietnam conflict, racial unrest and the deteriorating situation of American cities with What's Going On. Although the boss shows concern, the record has immediate success. Above all, this was the first time a Motown album was conceived in a new way, without Gordy totally controlling it. Recorded in Gaye's birthplace, this live album sets the stage for his artistic turn, as it begins with a delicious medley of his 60s hits, including the incredible I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Afterwards, Marvin Gaye brings the pearls of What's Going On to the stage, although the record had been worked out to the smallest detail in the studio. Throughout the whole concert, which lasts just over an hour, he gives certain topics a lot of time, he improvises and exchanges ideas with his overjoyed audience like never before.
