Over the course of the albums, Mark Lanegan advances as a lone wolf, always leaving to experiment or change violently of Brack. Since Blues Funeral in 2012, the former Screaming Trees singer has resumed his solo career, not content with his piges at Queens Of The Stone Age or his (sublime) duets with Isobel Campbell. And Straight Songs Of Sorrow shows again that his art is kaleidoscopic as possible, between contemporary grunge, electro-rock, austere blues, strange folk and shamanic ballad. Driven as always by his charismatic baritone voice, his cuvée 2020 is for the first time entirely autobiographical. Fifteen songs inspired by his personal history and inseparable from his memoirs, Sing Backwards and Weep, published simultaneously.
His youth in the state of Washington in the middle of the grunge tsunami, his addiction to drugs, death but also hope and even humor, everything is on the menu of this feast of the intimate ! "When I wrote the book, I didn't have catharsis," Lanegan says. "All I got was a Pandora's box filled with pain and misery. I walked in and remembered some shit I put aside twenty years ago. But I started writing these songs at the end of my work, and I realized that there was a deep emotion because they were all related to the memories of the book. It was a relief to suddenly return to music. Then I realized it was the gift of the book: these songs. Finally, Straight Songs Of Sorrow mixes the writing power of Mark Lanegan's first solo albums like the awesome Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (1994) with the formal complexity of his most recent ones. An intense fusion that he succeeded with the help of guests including his old accomplice Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs, Warren Ellis of Bad Seeds, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Adrian Utley of Portishead or even Ed Harcourt. A great rock'n'roll mass that is worth living.
