Choosing to title their first full-length album in five years The Villain is a bold statement — but that’s exactly what the singer-songwriter wanted it to be. Though Blum professes that they’ve never been a visual person, they have been assembling mood boards for this new era for a year: “There’s a lot of Gerard Way. There’s Marlon Brando and Paul Newman smoking cigarettes. There’s a lot of Troye Sivan for some reason,” they tell me. “A lot of brooding wet men.”

This may come as a surprise for those familiar with Blum’s previous work. For nearly two decades, they've been cutting their teeth on the DIY scene with smart, subdued folk songs. Over the past several years, though, they’ve been shifting toward a grungier, less acoustic sound, and “I’m So Bored,” the scathing breakup anthem that serves as the lead single off The Villain, is no exception. The song also marks a foray into pop, both in terms of sound and in terms of the accompanying visuals, which feature Blum as a tank top- and gold chain-wearing bad boy — and, for the first time, as a dancer.
