Heinrich Schütz comes from a family that was also wealthy in Chemnitz for centuries, to which the city fathers felt particularly attached. In 1619, the composer sent the city council a print of the Psalms of David, marked with his wedding date, after which he received a generous gift in return. Schütz was obviously inspired to create this collection of sacred motets by his teacher Giovanni Gabrieli, who used the galleries at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice for making music with mutually singing choral groups in a separate line-up. On the occasion of the Schütz anniversary in 2022, the MDR Radio Choir has put a selection of these and other double-choir motets on the program - including Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who had a special preference for this type of setting.
