At first he worked without a regular job, but in 1776 he became court composer to Prince Joseph Bachiani, Cardinal of Hungary. He played many roles on his own: conductor, violinist, and manager. He composed sonatas, string quartets, concertos, and stage works for his regular concerts. Among his highly acclaimed works were about 40 symphonies, which were performed at important events in Pressburg.The variety of instrumentation shows the high level of orchestras of the time and the influence of prominent musicians on his works. He died in Pressburg on October 16, 1781, at the short age of 40. Little else is known about him. The first album of Anton Zimmermann's works to be recorded was highly acclaimed by the same "L'Arte del Mondo" and conductor Werner Ehrhardt. After listening to the first CD, it is rare that one is so eagerly awaiting the next one as with this recording of Anton Zimmermann's three symphonies.
