As we discovered ancient pianos, a question gradually emerged: are we not too used to the relatively homogeneous sound of modern pianos, which we hear in all concert halls? Has this standardization, although technically advantageous, not impoverished the expression of the instruments, making them almost uniform and characterless? Pianoforte makers, such as Walter, Stein and Graf, as well as composers such as Beethoven, were engaged in a quest for new sounds, a requirement that shaped the styles and aesthetics of their time. The relationship between the evolution of instruments and the development of a composer's style is indeed not just a simple game of causality: rather, it is a mutual dialogue. Each technical progress opens the way to new expressive possibilities, the factors themselves being inspired by the innovative sound approaches of the composers, creative minds transcending the limits of the instruments of their time.
