Classical | Studio Master, Official Digital Download[/centerThe Swiss composer Fabian Müller (b. 1964) has repeatedly advocated for extraordinary musical instruments. His new CD is on the one hand about the pan flute, whose tradition goes back to Greek antiquity, on the other hand about the heckelphone, a bass oboe developed by the instrument maker Wilhelm Heckel in 1904. The concerto for panflute and orchestra, composed in 2017, is, like the other works by Fabian Müller, in a moderately modern style, whereby it is obviously important to show the melodic qualities of the instrument, which refer to its frequent use in folk music, as well as its virtuoso possibilities. The Swiss soloist Hanspeter Oggier plays the difficult-to-handle instrument with stupendous security and strong expression, with the Czech orchestra under Kaspar Zehnder providing attentive accompaniment.

Fabian Müller is an expert in the field of instrumentation, and so he has created his score in such a way that the sound of the heckelphone comes into its own in the solo passages, while the orchestra is allowed to unfold colorfully in the tutti sections. With the names "evocation", "Arabesque" and "Dance of the Satyrs", the composer has given the three movements the direction that refers to the mythology around the god Pan.
