For ex-Raincoats musician Gina Birch, causing trouble means more than chaos for the sake of it. Rather, Birch explores the feminist politics of mischief on her second solo release, Trouble. As a solo work, it's both different and similar to what has come before for the English artist. The introverted bedsit experimental quality of The Raincoats has been replaced by swagger and a production swamped by multiple voices, roaming even more sonically than Birch's solo debut, 2023's I Play My Bass Loud. That's not to say it's an improvement on any of these approaches—instead, it just shows what a searching mind Birch has.

Some of the hallmarks of The Raincoats' palette are evident in Birch's equal preferences for both noise and melody. Listeners, however, will find closer focus on the husky tonality of her voice, and her storytelling, particularly on "Cello Song." She contrasts the song's vocal harmonies and cello melodies with screeching, winding noise that helps to conclude the track.

"Causing Trouble Again," the album's central piece, is a clattering, bass-driven motorik number that feels like a real statement of intent. Birch brought in electronic pioneer Cosey Fanni Tutti and writer Caroline Coon to contribute to the track, inviting them to speak the names of women who have, in her words, "caused trouble." These collaborations were influenced considerably by Birch's presence in the feminist art history-focused Women in Revolt exhibition at London's Tate Modern—"I sort of became the poster girl for that show," she says.
