Egberto Gismonti - Sol Do Meio Dia (1978/2023) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

Inspired by his time with the Xingu Indians in the Amazon, to whom the album is also dedicated, Sol Do Meio Dia (Midday Sun) is a thoroughly fascinating transitional album by multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti. Joining him are percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott, guitarist Ralph Towner, and, for a brief time, Jan Garbarek on soprano saxophone.

At this point in his career, Gismonti began to fill the porous sound of his 8-string guitar. To that end, Vasconcelos and Walcott fill in much of the dizzying rhythmic space that makes up his sound, while Towner's 12-string guitar fills in the background with more explicit chord progressions. Walcott draws magical circles in "Raga," which Gismonti punctuates with nimble fingerwork on the guitar's highest harmonics. Thus begins a chain of sporadic outbursts that operate in dialogue. With modest virtuosity, the musicians walk hand in hand down this ecstatic path of music-making to an even more specific sound, this time characterized by kalimba and thumb piano. Gismonti's strident flute and wordless vocals here recall the work of CODONA. "Coração" is a rich solo that, along with the album's closing track, is a perfect display of Gismonti's note craft. The disc ends with a 25-minute suite. Garbarek makes his only appearance in the opening section, which shines with his melancholy vocals. An inviting solo by Towner opens the ears to another fluted passage carried by drums and handclaps. In moments like this, you can feel the forest as if it lives and breathes around us.
