Bobby Jaspar - Modern Jazz Au Club Saint Germain (1955/2021) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

I bought this album as a (at least at that time) absolute jazz newcomer and I got excited about it very quickly. As part of the truly fantastic and yet very inexpensive "Jazz in Paris" series from the renowned Verve label, which with over 100 albums now offers a truly representative cross-section of jazz history, "Modern Jazz au club St-Germain" presents itself as a very pleasant album to listen to, which despite all its unobtrusiveness (it was called "elevator music" by a friend of mine) never gets boring and also offers the desired musical depth for the experienced ear. This is a digitally remastered recording from 1955 in 2000. In addition to some standards (I can't get started, I'll remember April), classical bop pieces (Bag's Groove, A night in Tunisia, Milestones), it also contains pieces composed by the Belgian tenor saxophonist Bobby Jasper himself, such as "Memory of Dick", which swings slightly melancholy and lets Jasper's virtuoso saxophone playing shine in all its expressiveness.
All in all, a successful album, which - I believe - will inspire both the connoisseur and the newcomer, and represents an ideal entry into the "Jazz in Paris" series, which offers not only rather unknown musicians such as Jasper, but also works by Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, Django Reinhard, Dizzy Gillespie and many others.
