    The term Tumbuk in gamelan music refers to a common tone which occurs in two differently tuned gamelan scales. Figuratively speaking, it is a point at which different realities meet and mix, a musical linchpin. For me, this is a beautiful metaphor for this ensemble, in which my interest in the sound worlds of Indonesian music with its microtonality, scales, timbres and sound effects coincides with the musical understanding of a jazz band.
