The Neuron in Context

The Neuron in Context by Vanessa Lux
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 193 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 22.8 MB

Neuroscience has largely abandoned its localizationist and mechanistic framework of the 20th century. The plastic, embodied, and network character of our nervous system is widely acknowledged and systems theory approaches to consciousness dominate the field. However, the underlying neuron theory has not changed. The neuron doctrine, conceptualizing the single neuron as atomistic, one-directional source of neural function, still provides the template for our understanding of these basic elements of our nervous system and the material foundation of consciousness. Yet, the single neuron does not exist as an isolated unit. It is embedded within multiple cellular, structural, and functional contexts, and highly depends on them for its development, neural activity, and survival. The book discusses the constraints of the neuron doctrine and its pragmatic reductionism in the light of the growing knowledge about the brain’s connectivity, plasticity, and systemic and embodied nature. To overcome these constraints, the author argues for a new neuron theory, depicting the neuron as bidirectional hub which is at the same time source and product of neural function. This bidirectionality is further characterized by spatial and time dimensions, placing the neuron within a multi-level pathway model of psychobiological development from the perspective of Developmental Embodiment Research. Furthermore, the author discusses the potential of neuroepigenetic markers to characterize the neuron and its range of plasticity within this developmental perspective. With its focus on neuroepigenetics, the book addresses a knowledge gap in the current study of the neural foundations of psychological functions.

Food Security in the Caribbean: Historical Perspectives, Current Challenges, and Sustainable Solutions by Donovan Stanberry , Lystra Fletcher-Paul
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 267 Pages | ISBN : 3031660544 | 16 MB

Food security is a pressing concern in the Caribbean. Caribbean countries produce and export crops including sugar, bananas, and coffee, but this archipelago of states relies heavily on imported food when it comes to nourishing the Caribbean population. As much as 80% of the food consumed is imported. This is because the region does not have a robust domestic food crop or livestock sector. Much of the imported food is processed: high in sugar, fat, and salt. As a result, the region now has one of the highest rates of obesity in the Americas. And there are, as a consequence, heightened incidences of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. This negatively impacts the resources and budgets of health facilities in the Caribbean, which in turn hurts the developmental prospects of these Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

This book will help cognitive behavioral psychotherapists adopt a transdiagnostic approach in their practice. In recent years, a new approach in psychotherapy has been arguing for a move from a focus on specific diagnoses to a transdiagnostic approach that targets psychological mechanisms and processes common to different mental health conditions in order to develop more personalized treatments. This book shows how to adopt a transdiagnostic approach using different third wave cognitive behavioral therapy protocols, such as: Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Metacognitive Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Process-Based Therapy and the Unified Protocol.

Using NEPA to Combat Global Warming

Using NEPA to Combat Global Warming by David L. Keys
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 204 Pages | ISBN : 3031693159 | 8.7 MB

This book will help policy makers, university students, and the general public understand how the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is intended to work, and how it can be used to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to combat global warming. Unlike all other books on NEPA, this book focuses on the global warming problem in terms of thermodynamics and entropy. It explains how NEPA can help combat global warming by operationalizing the “energy requirements and conservation potential” analysis requirement in the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations, 40 CFR 1502.16 (a)(7), and it puts the past, present, and future of the NEPA statute, the CEQ regulations, and energy analysis requirements all in one easy to find, portable place. It will be an excellent resource for university students and teachers, policy analysts, and those members of the public that want to know all about the NEPA Process.
