Historically, a major problem for the study of the large deformation of crystalline solids has been the apparent lack of unity in experimentally determined stress-strain functions. The writer's discovery in 1949 of the unexpectedly high velocity of incremental loading waves in pre-stressed large deformation fields emphasized to him the pressing need for the independent, systematic experimental study of the subject, to provide a firm foundation upon which physically plausible theories for the finite deformation of crystalline solids could be constructed. Such a study undertaken by the writer at that time and continued uninterruptedly to the present, led in 1956 to the development of the diffraction grating experiment which permitted, for the first time, the optically accurate determination of the strain-time detail of non-linear finite amplitude wave fronts propagating into crystalline solids whose prior history was precisely known. These experimental diffraction grating studies during the past decade have led to the discovery that the uniaxial stress-strain functions of 27 crystalline solids are unified in a single, generalized stress-strain function which is described, much of it hitherto unpublished, in the present monograph. The detailed study of over 2,000 polycrystal and single crystal uni­ axial stress experiments in 27 crystalline solids, in terms of the variation of a large number of pertinent parameters, has provided new unified pat­ terns of understanding which, it is hoped, will be of interest and value to theorists and experimentalists alike.

The term "dislocation" is used in several different senses in the literature of mechanics. In the elassic work of VOLTERRA, WEINGARTEN, and SOMIGLIANA, it refers to particular solutions of the equations of linear elasticity, in which a con­ tinuous field of strain does not correspond, globally, to a continuous field of dis­ placement. The configuration of the body so obtained, even when that body is free of all load, is subject to interior stress that does not vanish, and in general no deformation of the body as a wh oIe can bring it into a stress-free configuration. Nevertheless, if any sufficiently sm all part of the body is considered by itself, a configuration for it in which the stress is everywhere zero may be found at once. In this work constitutiL"e assumptions provide the basic data. These consist in prescribed stress-free configurations for each material point and in prescribed elastic moduli governing the response to deformation from the stress-free configuration at each material point. Everything follows from these data, ineluding the dislocations present, if any. In particular, the common boundary-value problems of linear elasticity may be set and solved for the dislocated body.

The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgical Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific corr.munity. This volume, Surfaces and Interfaces ll: Physical and Mechanical Properties, can be considered a continuation, or perhaps an extension, of the information contained in Surfaces and Interfaces I: Chemical and Physical Characteristics. The emphasis in this volume is focused on: the technological significance of surfaces and interfaces; surface­ sensitive mechanical properties; environment-sensitive properties; control of grain structure; and composite materials. It is felt that the rather ambitious undertaking of the program committee to place the role of "surfaces and interfaces" in its proper context has been achieved. The balance between basic research findings and more applied research allows the reader a certain degree of latitude in the use of the two volumes. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Col. C. T. Riordan, Commanding Officer, Dr. E. Scala, Technical Di­ rector, and J. F.
