• Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have an intellectual disability. Special Olympics notes that 1–3 percent of the global population may have an intellectual disability—as many as 200 million people. According to the IRIS Domestic Violence Center, an estimated 2–4 million American women are abused each year by their partners (this includes controlling, emotional, and physical abuse).
• According to the Disability and American Families U.S. Census Bureau Report, 20.9 million families have members with a disability.
• Out of 72.3 million families included in the U.S. Census Bureau Report, about 2 in every 7 reported having at least one member with a disability.
• According to “The Invisible Victims,” by David D. Sorensen, studies indicate that people with intellectual disabilities are four to ten times more likely to have acts of violence committed against them.
