    Il rampollo di una ricca famiglia di Midland City, Ohio, Otto Waltz, viene mandato a Vienna per iscriversi alla celebre Accademia di Belle Arti. Otto è fermamente convinto di avere un grande talento artistico, ma non così la pensano i professori dell’Accademia, che non lo ammettono nemmeno ai corsi. Identica bocciatura per uno sbandato austriaco di nome Adolf Hitler, che Otto prende subito in simpatia. Tornato a Midland City, Otto costruisce una grande e bizzarra casa con una enorme soffitta dove custodisce una collezione di armi da fuoco di ogni tipo, una collezione che segnerà il destino di suo figlio Rudolph decenni più tardi. È lui, Rudy, "Il grande tiratore", che racconta le alterne fortune della sua strampalata famiglia, tra bandiere naziste che garriscono al vento, proiettili sparati da un ragazzo ai palazzi vicini, bombe ai neutroni che spazzano via ogni forma di vita, opere d’arte immaginifiche e hotel di lusso a Haiti. Sono tutte cartoline dall'inferno che ci invia Kurt Vonnegut, immagini perfettamente folli ma plausibili nel plot surreale dell'autore statunitense, che mescola un umorismo alla Mark Twain e una dura satira sociale.
