    Nel giugno 1934, invitato al Primo congresso degli scrittori sovietici, che in agosto riunirà settecento scrittori, cinquanta dei quali stranieri, André Malraux intraprende il suo primo viaggio in URSS. Durante il suo soggiorno mette per iscritto delle note. Riporta fedelmente ciò che sente. Fa le domande tipiche di un romanziere. Sfilano così sulla scena della nuova Russia una serie infinita di comparse: bambini, contadini, donne, in un ritratto psicologico e sociale che a mano a mano si fa più completo, includendo naturalmente scrittori e artisti del tempo: Erenburg, Pasternak, Prokofiev, Eisenstein, Dovcenko, Pudovkin e molti altri. Al congresso, Malraux sfiderà la dottrina ufficiale pronunciando il celebre discorso "L'arte è una conquista", per sostenere la causa della libertà dell'artista rivoluzionario, prima di prendere definitivamente le distanze dal comunismo. Questo volume, "documento eccezionale di un'epoca eccezionale", raccoglie gli appunti messi insieme nel corso di quel viaggio, pubblicati da Gallimard nel 2007.
