    Et lille kræ fortæller om den tidlige barndom i København, indtil familien med den otte-årige Martin rejste til Bornholm, faderens fødeø. 1870ernes København opleves på nært hold - set nedefra, fra flertallets side. Fattigdom, perioder med usikkert arbejde, begyndende socialisme, drukkenskab, sammenhold.
