Today people in general are quite aware that a good and healthy environment is very important
for a happy and disease-free life. Combinations of various factors such as population explosion,
urbanization, pollution, deforestation, industrialization, etc. have contributed to the degradation
of the environment. Global carbon dioxide emissions increase day by day. About half the world’s
wetlands are lost already. Two out of three persons on the earth will not have enough water by
2025, if present consumption patterns continue. More than half the world’s coral reefs are
threatened by human activities. Exposure to hazardous chemicals has been shown to have adverse
human health effects, ranging from birth defects to cancer. Already, more than 1.3 billion people
live in acute poverty without access to an adequate diet, decent housing, basic sanitation, clean
water, and other essentials for a healthy, secure existence. What can we do about these discouraging
trends?
