    "En almuekvindes liv" er husmandskonen Karoline Graves selvbiografiske fortælling om sit liv på Kalundborgegnen og om almuens slidsomme tilværelse. Trods mangelfuld uddannelse besad Karoline Graves et stort skriftligt talent, som kommer levende til udtryk – blandt andet i hendes gengivelser af almuens gængse talesprog.

    Det lå ikke i kortene, at husmandskonen Karoline Graves (1858-1932) skulle blive forfatter. Hun voksede op under fattige kår i den danske almue, hendes uddannelse var mangelfuld, og hun kom tidligt ud at tjene. Men lysten til og talentet for at udtrykke sig på skrift var til stede, og fra 1909 begyndte hun at nedskrive fortællinger om gammelt folkeliv i omegnen af Tissø på Sjælland til brug for Dansk Folkemindesamling. Senere udgav hun den selvbiografiske bog "En almuekvindes liv", og fra 1924 blev hun sikret en årlig understøttelse på finansloven.
