    "Det kolde hjerte" er en semi-selvbiografiske roman om en mands vanskeligheder med at knytte sig følelsesmæssigt til andre. Palle Rosenkrantz havde selv en dybt religiøs skotsk/engelsk mor, der tidligt blev enke med små fire drenge og senere slog sig ned i Rom med sin yngste søn. Palle og de to andre brødre kom i familiepleje og på Herlufsholm, og hans minder om moren begrænser sig derfor til en række breve. Et senere barnebarn af Palle Rosenkrantz mener, at denne barndom medførte, at Palle Rosenkrantz selv havde svært ved at indgå i følelsesmæssige relationer.
