In this costume drama, based on the novel by Jane Austen, Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters are left with almost nothing after Mr. Dashwood's death. They move into a cottage and sensible eldest daughter Elinor attempts to keep things running smoothly, in spite of her free-spirited sister's efforts to the contrary.
Au siècle dernier en Angleterre, à la suite du décès de leur père, les soeurs Dashwood et leur mère sont contraintes de réduire drastiquement leur train de vie et de quitter leur propriété pour s'exiler à la campagne. L'aînée, Elinor, renonce à un amour qui semble pourtant partagé, tandis que sa cadette, Marianne, s'amourache du séduisant Willoughby. Si la première cache ses peines de coeur, la seconde vit bruyamment son bonheur. Jusqu'au jour où Willoughby disparaît.
