This movie portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 1970s, following tape recordings of Christiane F. 14-year-old Christiane lives with her mother and little sister in a typical multi-story apartment building in Berlin. She's fascinated by 'The Sound', a new disco with the most modern equipment. Although legally she's too young, she asks a friend to take her. There, she meets Detlef, who's in a clique where everybody's on drugs. Step by step she gets drawn deeper into the scene.

Thirteen-year-old Christiane F (Brunckhorst) lives on a Berlin housing estate with her mother and sister. In a local disco she meets Detlef (Haustein), whose familiarity with the local drugs scene impresses her. But when her sister leaves to be with her estranged father and her mother's boyfriend moves in, she seeks comfort in Detlef.
He, however, has become addicted to heroin and she soon joins him in the habit as well as turning tricks to buy them the drugs. As friends die around them, it becomes clear that either the heroin or the streets will kill Christiane but she and Detlef remain true, swearing to kick the habit. But almost immediately, the bond is broken as she overdoses. Attempting to recover her old life, she quits but cold turkey proves to be deceptively easy and temptation is just a wrap away…
