Bleak Moments (1971) is Mike Leigh's first feature film. The film presents a stark portrayal of human isolation, centring on the failure of personal communication and social interaction. In its uncompromising outlook, it is closer to Meantime (1983) and Naked (1993) than to Leigh's more optimistic works.
Les efforts de Silvya, qui vit dans une maison austère d'une triste banlieue, pour échapper à sa morne existence restent vains. Elle s'occupe de sa soeur mentalement retardée et n'a pour entourage que sa collègue de bureau Pat, accaparée par une mère autoritaire, un jeune beatnik qu'elle héberge et un professeur sexuellement inhibé.
