Adapté du roman de Suzanne Lilar «La confession anonyme», «Benvenuta» est un bel exemple du raffinement extrême de l’art d’André Delvaux, raffinement si subtil que l’on peut facilement passer à côté du film sans en avoir saisi toute l’intelligence et la complexité. Un jeune scénariste cherche à réaliser un film sur un personnage imaginaire, «Benvenuta», inventé par une romancière plusieurs années auparavant. Il rend alors visite à cette auteure, à Gand, convaincu de la part autobiographique importante qu’elle a mis dans ce personnage et l’interroge sans relâche, cherchant à connaître Benvenuta, à la comprendre et à la rencontrer…

Jeanne, who once wrote a sensational love story of a young pianist on a concert tour of Italy where she meets a handsome older magistrate, now lives as a recluse in Ghent. She receives a visit from François, a young screenwriter adapting the story. He wants to fill out the script with details. Jeanne first refuses to identify herself with the main characters Benvenuta and Livio, whom she insists are purely fictional. But François is determined to find out the truth that lies beneath the fiction.
