A diffraction of the autobiography using family footage filmed between the 1940s and today, this "science fiction documentary" creates multiple "I"s and transcends a story of mourning.
WHEN I WILL BE DICTATOR is a 'science fiction documentary' constructed from hundreds of reels of amateur super 8 film.
When I will be dictator is a non-autobiographical project: and if, at the other end of the universe, worlds are being born every second containing other possibilities for our lives? What would all these lives that I haven’t lived be? Adventurer, psychopath, perfect mother, chief accountant, invisible man?
Upon this fictional pretext – which functions in as many chapters as there are parallel worlds – the film nonchalantly unreels the story of George; how we met, his madness and what he probably became in another universe. The deeper issue at stake in the film is mourning, how to deal with this hidden labour.
The images are woven together from amateur 8 mm and Super8 films – from the 1940s to the modern day, tangling threads of fiction and documentary, the real and the fake, mine and other people's, comedy and drama…
