The film is the story of two teenage girls, Louise and Henriette, who have grown up orphaned and are believed to be blind. While it is true that they cannot see during the day, Louise and Henriette are given the power of vision at night, when they hunt their prey.
One of French erotic horror specialist Jean Rollin's last films, TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES is also among his most elegant. The titular figures are young women who dress like twins and are both blind (or so think the nuns at the Catholic orphanage and the kindly doctor who adopts them). In fact, they're vampires whose eyesight and other senses only come alive at night when they secretly roam cemeteries in search of prey. In a series of disconnected set pieces blurring time period and chronology, they meet other exotic creatures of the dark including a human she-wolf, a hawk-like Midnight Lady and a cadaver-eating female ghoul. Featuring cameos appearances by Rollin regular Brigitte Lahaie and Eurosploitation favorite Tina Aumont, TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES is a sort of self-homage reprising all the director's favorite themes and a tipping of the hat to his cult followers. As usual, narrative and explicit violence take a backseat to the creation of a leisurely, playfully macabre dream atmosphere in which our thirty heroines simultaneously personify innocence and corruption, beauty and death.Dennis Harvey
