The film that unveiled one of cinema’s great stars to the world – Liv Ullmann – would also be the final feature from the pioneering Edith Carlmar, Norway’s first woman director. Aged only 20, Liv simply lights up the screen, exuding sensuality, power, abandon…and something dark and a little threatening.
The story of a young Gerd, played by Liv Ullmann in her first leading role, who falls in love with a young boy. She is considered a 'loose' woman, and the boy's family does not accept their relationship. The young couple run away to a cabin in the woods where they meet a rogue man who tests their relationship.
… A beautifully photographed and extremely well paced story that showcases the talents of a phenomenal actress, even at such an early stage in her career. Liv Ullmann delivers a positively scintillating and sexy performance as Gerd, one that would be emulated a year later, wittingly or unwittingly, by Lee Remick in Elia Kazan's "Wild River" in which Nature would also play a crucial role.
