Storyline: Massie plays a young man sentenced to a year's prison term for slugging a man in a jealous fight over his girl friend. He is assigned kitchen duties and soon fits into the highly structured routines of the prisoners. This includes swiping food from the kitchen to trade with men from other areas. When a cellmate is caught bringing a knife out of the kitchen, Massie takes the blame in order to allow his mate to be set free in a month after a long stay. Script and direction take a personable view of prison life, showing the prisoners as individuals. Though the picture is filled with humorous moments, underneath is the continual feeling of the degradation and humiliation the prisoners must endure.
