An academic and graphic account of the rule of the famously narcissistic Roman Emperor Commodus, who inherited the Roman Empire from his father, Marcus Aurelius, at the height of its expansion in the second century AD, told over a backdrop of violence, sex, and corruption.

    Part 1: The Triumvirate
After success in war makes Caesar a rising star, escalating tension between Rome's two most powerful men creates an opportunity for advancement.
The First Triumvirate marked a pivotal shift in Roman politics. Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus formed an informal alliance to bypass Senate authority and pursue their ambitions, dominating Roman politics from 60 to 53 BCE. This power grab weakened traditional institutions and set the stage for future conflicts.

    Part 2: The Great Conqueror
Caesar's wealth grows as one-third of the triumvirate, but his brutal tactics make enemies, forcing him to remake his image as a military conqueror.
Under his leadership, Rome conquered territory throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, reaching the North Sea and during 53–50 BCE Caesar was suppressing a Gallic revolt led by Vercingetorix in the siege and battle of Alesia. Julius Caesar was now the governor over a region north of Italy from what was southern Gaul to Illyricum.

    Part 3: Crossing the Rubicon
Caesar's hard-won victory over Gaul endears him to the Roman people but leads to a military showdown with the Senate and his former ally, Pompey.
By 49 BCE Caesar's relationship with the Roman Senate had dangerously deteriorated. The Senate commanded him to disband his army and return home to Rome, and ordered his armies not to cross the Rubicon river. Caesar understood that his political career would be over if he obeyed the Senate's demand, but he also knew that defying it would be an act of war. He decided that war was favourable.

Part 4: Queen of the Nile
After chasing Pompey to Alexandria, Caesar is victorious in the war, then swiftly makes a powerful new ally and lover in Egypt's ruler, Cleopatra.
Julius Caesar and Cleopatra played significant roles in ancient history, and their relationship , while short-lived, had a significant impact on both their lives and the course of history. He was 52 and she was 21 at the time. Caesar had no sons from his Roman wife, Calpurnia, but in June 47 BC, Cleopatra gave birth to a son, Ptolemy Caesar, known as Caesarion – 'little Caesar' – who was unfortunately later killed by Octavian, the grand nephew of Caesar.

Part 5: The Ides of March
His reforms win public adoration, but Caesar's imperial ambitions antagonize the Senate and ill health undermines his authority, sparking a conspiracy.
The Ides is the 13th or 15th day of the month in the Roman calendar. The Ides of March is a particularly famous Ides—it's the day the tyrant died. On this day in 44 BC Julius Caesar was assassinated by 22 Roman senators, who resented Caesar's popularity and arrogance. Caesar's death resulted in a long series of civil wars that ended in the death of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire.
