From the point-of-view of the children, "Mother" tells the story of the most unappreciated, loving and giving mother, who would sacrifice her own life, and sometimes the life of others, for her loved ones. In the autumn of 1955, a family of five children is living in the Tohoku area. In order to take care of her paralysed husband, the mother has to sacrifice her five children by giving them away. The children has to suffer all the loneliness and hardships that this decision has brought them. 15 years have passed, all five of them have got married. Now, they come to understand that their mother's love for them was the greatest love of all.
This is a story half told in flashback about a husband and wife who are farmers in Tohoku region in Japan with their five young children, who are typically loud kids. She was strict with them, as you can see. The husband ends up becoming paralyzed so the wife has to devote all her time to them, ostensibly telling the kids she is longer their mom but they are on their own. The narrator, one of the children (Hisako), now grown, is getting married and goes back to see her parents. The story has a few rough moments, but its fairly well told. In a sense its all about choices and the things many children take for granted. I'm giving it an 8 because its not very long, it flows well and the acting is uniformly good. Not for everyone, but worth watching.
