Vitaly Mel'nikov and his films always had a fan audience, but he was hardly on any critic's list of leading directors. Among his works, that were put 'on shelf' in Brezhnev's stagnant times, are such famous films as 'Elder Son' and 'September Vacation'. Melnikov, unlike 'official', government-recognized directors, did not pretty-up life in his works, but rather painted it as it is, not shying away from the negativities of Soviet existence.
Due to the honesty of his approach Melnikov gives a true and faithful view of the Soviet life, especially in the suburbs of big cities (here Saint-Petersburg) : family relations, place of women and men in the society, living conditions, etc…
Melnikov is helped by this wonderful Russian school of actors in the embodiment of this slightly melodramatic story : a working mother living alone with her son meets a lanky nice guy full of good will…
A film also belonging to the tradition of those portraits of Russian women, whose beauty is also keeping dignity in struggle for life.
