Il 18 febbraio 1952 violenti raffiche di grecale colpiscono il New England, tormentando le città lungo la costa orientale degli States e scatenando il caos sulle navi finite disgraziatamente lungo le loro mortali traiettorie. Tra le navi in pericolo vi è la SS Pendleton, una petroliera diretta a Boston con a bordo più di 30 marinai. Con l'imbarcazione squarciata e in rapido affondamento, l'ufficiale più anziano a bordo, Ray Sibert (Casey Affleck), si rende presto conto che spetta a lui prendersi carico dell'equipaggio per far vincere ogni paura agli uomini e portarli a metter da parte le differenze tra loro per collaborare come un solo uomo. Nel frattempo, la notizia del disastro raggiunge la stazione della guardia costiera di Chatham, dove il maresciallo Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) ordina un'audace operazione di salvataggio. Nonostante le condizioni climatiche avverse, quattro uomini sotto la guida del capitano Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) partono su una scialuppa di salvataggio alla volta della SS Pendleton, sfidando il mare agitato e la sorte.
