The film tells the story of an Irish immigrant family in Australia during the second half of the 19th century. Patrick Durack leaves Western Ireland for Australia in 1853, where he founds a dynasty of pioneers and builds a cattle empire across vast stretches of Australia. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Mary Durack, who is the granddaughter of the main protagonist, Patsy Durack.
