In the late-17th century, as white settlers in the New World pushed further and further west, Native Americans suddenly found themselves fighting for both their territory and their lives.
As a bloody war raged on between the United States and American Indians, many tribes that lost members chose to replace them with white-skinned captives. But occasionally, a curious thing happened: Upon being given their freedom, some "adoptees" chose to stay rather than return to white society.
When these white settlers began encroaching on Native American land, they immediately became prime targets in the tribal "adoption" process, wherein the lost member of a tribe would be replaced with a captive. In this mesmerizing program, discover the compelling stories of those settlers who were taken captive, adopted into a tribe, and lived to write about their experiences. In dramatic reenactments, see why so many of the white victims willingly chose to remain with their captors, ultimately refusing to return to civilian life.
As white settlers pushed west, resulting wars with Native Americans claimed more victims than the dead. The perils faced by the Native American population as the white settlers encroached on their land were immeasurable. But some of the white settlers who were captured by the Native American population ended up leading extremely interesting lives, with many of them reluctant to leave their captors once given the chance to be "free." In fact, what occurred was a large-scale adoption process, where white captives would be integrated into Native American families once a family member died.
