From the industrial past to a remarkable rewilding. Iolo Williams explores the history, heritage and habitats of an abundance of wildlife in the south Wales valleys.

Chapter 1:
Iolo Williams is back exploring the south Wales valleys. He heads up the Upper Clydach river to find a fantastic dipper's nest hidden beneath a rock overhang.

One of the best places to see the scarce marsh fritillary butterfly is an old colliery site near Ystradgynlais. Another surprise is a kingfisher that's built its nest by digging a tunnel into coal waste. In the Amman valley, a stunning oak woodland that survived the coal industry is full of nesting migrant birds from Africa.

On the hills between Pontardawe and Glanamman, Iolo finds peace within the bronze age ring cairn of Carn Llechart surrounded by reed buntings, skylarks and meadow pipits. Deep in a conifer plantation in the Neath valley is a site for Wales's rarest breeding bird, the honey buzzard. It's so rare that only one nest is known in the whole of Wales. Iolo also visits Melincourt Falls, a brilliant places for all kinds of ferns, mosses, and liverworts.

Chapter 2:
Iolo is surprised by adders living on an old colliery site next to Tonmawr rugby pitch, up the valley from Port Talbot. The uplands at the head of the Afan valley are a surprising place to find water voles that have become increasingly rare elsewhere. Here, they have taken up residence in pools next to the wind turbines.

And in the Ogmore valley, Iolo's patience is rewarded with the chance to watch a barn owl's ghostly flight as it hunts over the heather. Even more haunting is the astonishing sound called churring made by nightjars as they call at dusk. These birds have flown all the way from Africa to raise their chicks. Iolo is thrilled to hear them calling until finally the midges force him to head for home.

Chapter 3:
Iolo Williams heads up the Taff, Cynon and Rhondda valleys.

The huge blast furnace ruins of the old Cyfarthfa ironworks near Merthyr Tydfil have been colonised by nesting sand martins from Africa. In the waters of the Cynon, once one of the most polluted rivers in the UK, Iolo is thrilled to find all sorts of invertebrates and fish. Nearby, a gem of wetland has formed supporting the secretive water rail and noisy reed warblers.

Another great find is an old woodland near Pontypridd which has a fantastic range of breeding birds - it has somehow survived the industrial age. But the biggest eye-opener of all is on an old coke works on the outskirts of Beddau. It's full of rare insects that are adapting to live on a post-industrial moonscape, and has transformed into an important wildlife habitat. Also on his trek, Iolo makes friends with a vixen in the Rhondda.

Chapter 4:
Iolo Williams is exploring the wildlife of the old coalfields of south Wales. He heads up the valleys north of Newport, starting off at Blaenavon, where he locates an elusive bird that very few people ever see – a long-eared owl. It really is a stunning bird, and Iolo has a rare chance to help ring the owl's chicks.

Peregrine falcons are known to be the fastest birds in the world – able to reach speeds of over 200 mph when hunting. Iolo enjoys watching a successful breeding pair nesting at a site in Ebbw Vale. Nearby, ground that used to be the site of an ironworks is now an important wildlife haven full of wild flowers and butterflies. The star attraction is the marble white, a butterfly that's only recently spread into Wales. Iolo also visits the 'silent valley' and finds lapwings nesting on an old coal tip above New Tredegar.
