Conflict, controversy and culture - the story of a generation that rebuilt Britain. A classic documentary that marked fifty years since the arrival of the Empire Windrush.

Chapter 1: Arrival
It begins with the arrival of the troop ship Empire Windrush on June 22nd, 1948 carrying 500 West Indians. Britain's first taste of mass immigration this century was soured by racial hostility which escalated in the years to come, culminating in the notorious Nottingham and Notting Hill riots of 1958.

Chapter 2: Intolerance
The 1958 Notting Hill riots and Britain's first racial murder appeared to predict a bleak future for the immigrants who arrived on the Windrush. Archive footage reveals how, in the face of adversity, black communities and churches sprang up across the country, offering new hope to those starting their lives afresh - until Enoch Powell's infamous Rivers of Blood speech in 1968 looked set to wreck their efforts.

Chapter 3: A New Generation
The examination of immigration of Caribbeans to Britain continues with a look at the race riots of the 1970s, and the dilemma faced by children of early migrants over whether to define themselves as British.

Chapter 4: A British Story
The series charting the fate of immigrants to Britain ends on an optimistic note with an overview of success stories for black people in politics, media and sport. Leading lights of Anglo-African culture, including Valerie Amos, Lenny Henry and Soul II Soul's Jazzie B, analyse how the country's mood has changed over the past 60 years from hostility to acceptance.
