Alleluia (2014)

Manipulated by a loving and jealous husband, Gloria has run away with her daughter and started a new life far away from men and from the rest of the world. Impelled by her friend, Madeleine, she agrees to meet Michel through a dating site. The first time they see each other, there is a spark. Michel, the small-time crook (profession: gigolo), is thrilled and Gloria falls deeply in love. Out of fear, Michel runs away, but Gloria comes to find him and makes him promise never to leave her again. She is ready to do anything to salvage this love. She abandons her daughter and pretends to be Michel’s sister, so that he can continue his “widow” scams. But jealousy drives Gloria crazy, and she eventually kills Marguerite, one of the widows. Michel is in shock, but the two lovers remain tied to each other by some powerful link. They will keep going on their sordid path. Beyond the morbid pact that unites them, Michel finds in Gloria a sort of mother figure he has always been deprived of; for Gloria, Michel is the incarnation of absolute love in a life she thought was over. Alleluia is the free adaptation of a news item that shook the United States from 1947 to 1949; the story of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez, or how a young nurse and a swindler, small-time gigolo, will fall into a deadly tragedy.

Not really lost, but sort of found. That is what you may think of the two main characters. And while the dynamic seems to swing one way at first, it becomes clear that there is something deeper and more Animalistic going on too. Something that is impossible to stop. Americans call something "a glutton for punishment". You could say that for one of the main characters, though he's not always on the receiving end of that punishment. Also how can you stop the unstoppable? It seems to be impossible.

Whatever the case, our "heroes" are far out, to use another phrase. You might not be able to connect (actually if you do connect 100% you might wanna check yourself), but it might also be impossible to let go. To not watch this to the end. Unless you have a problem with violence and nudity in movies that is of course. Because there is plenty of that going (literally) around here. There is a message hidden in between all that mayhem though.
