The Siemens PLM Software development team is pleased to announce the availability of FiberSIM 17.2. This release added support for the NX 2212 Series, but the most exciting new capability introduced the NX-exclusive Surface Offset utility.

Included with this release is support for the NX 2212 Series, though we also maintain support for the following older NX releases: NX12.0.1, 1926, 1953, 1980, and 2007. Fibersim 17.2 also supports Teamcenter 12.4, 13.x, and 14.x. And finally, we have support for other CAD systems, including CATIA V5-6R2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 (also known as V5R29, R30, R31, and R32), as well as Creo Parametrics 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0.

But the most exciting new capability introduced in this release is the NX-exclusive Surface Offset utility. Here’s a quick overview before we dive in:

- This utility creates offset IML surfaces, including ramps, for each constant thickness area of a composite definition
- NX features will be replaced during regeneration after a design change, allowing parametric geometry to be built from the utility’s results
- This utility replaces the Parametric Surface Offset tools in NX

Composite designs are usually created without generating a 3D geometric representation of every ply. Therefore, it can be difficult and time consuming to create the inner mold line (IML) and subsequent solid that represents the final composite design. The new Surface Offset utility in Fibersim 17.2 can help with this process. This tool creates offset inner mold line (IML) surfaces, including ramps, for each constant thickness area of a composite definition. The constant thickness areas generated by this function are offset to the correct thickness based on all layers for a chosen laminate. Then when the inevitable design change occurs, if a constant area and/or ramp are still valid, the corresponding NX feature will be replaced during regeneration, allowing parametric geometry to be built from the results.

The recommended workflow for using this utility is the following:
- Create CAD geometry for the Fibersim design.
- Define/update composite zones and layer definitions using Fibersim.
- Generate offset surfaces using the Surface Offset utility.
- Create parametric downstream CAD data from the Surface Offset results, such as Sew, Split, Solid Bodies, etc. to create the final outputs.
- Consume upstream design changes via updating composite zones and layer definitions in Fibersim
- Regenerate offset surfaces using the Surface Offset utility
- Validate that the geometry created in step 4 has been properly updated through standard NX feature update methodology

Few notes:
- We highly recommend that if your composite design includes a core, you follow steps 1-4 initially for the undercore geometry (i.e. not including the core in the surface offset). Then the core solid should be created in NX utilizing traditional parametric CAD practices. Finally, an over core laminate should be created in Fibersim to represent the rest of composite definition. This methodology will result in the most robust, updateable workflow.
- It is recommended to have the “Delete Child Feature with Parent” NX option set to No so that geometry built off of the Surface Offset results are not automatically deleted when regenerating.

The nature of fiber-reinforced plastic products require rapid changes in the way analysis, design and manufacturing is traditionally performed. Unravel the complexities of these materials with the Fibersim portfolio of software. Experience a concurrent engineering process where analysis and design are performed in the context of the manufacturing process, which is key to developing optimal designs. The open architecture of Fibersim provides a specialized engineering environment to create a composite digital twin in NX, CATIA, or CREO.

Fibersim Overview Webinar

Siemens Portfolio Development Executive Leigh Hudson and Kurt Politowicz will be presenting a webinar on Fibersim, Siemen’s dominant composite product development platform. The webinar will demonstrate how to increase the rate, enhance the quality, and expand profitability when generating composite parts. This is a must see webinar for any company working with designing and/or manufacturing composite parts.
