The year 2017 marked the 50th year of the establishment of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was created in 1967 to serve the ever-increasing demand for cooperation in the region and preserve multilateralism as a way to strengthen economic prosperity. Our cover story ‘ASEAN at 50: Some Refl ections’ gives a glimpse of the outcomes of the various ASEAN Ministerial meetings in 2017, in order to understand the evolution of the association in the context of persisting as well as evolving challenges.
The analysis holds immense significance with the 10 Heads of the ASEAN member states having attended India’s 69th Republic Day as Chief Guests on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The fi rst-of-its-kind instance in the history of democratic India, also refl ected the country’s increasing influence in the Southeast Asia region.
