    "Libertà" venne pubblicata da Verga per la prima volta il 12 marzo 1882 sulla "Domenica letteraria". Al centro del racconto di Verga i drammatici fatti di Bronte, avvenuti tra il 2 e il 5 agosto 1860 durante la spedizione dei Mille in Sicilia.
    La povera gente è in rivolta e a farne le spese sono i notabili del luogo, fino all'arrivo del garibaldino Nino Bixio che pone fine al massacro ribattezzato "carnevale furibondo". Bixio ripristina l'ordine istituendo un tribunale che in maniera piuttosto sommaria condanna a morte 5 rivoltosi, ponendo fine ai disordini.
    Verga non giudica né commenta la vicenda, si limita a raccontare i fatti dando sfogo alla sua visione pessimistica dell'umanità.
