In the summer of 1965 – in the midst of an era of great rock guitar hooks – Jeff Beck made his entrance (and what an entrance) with the bitingly unforgettable riff backbone to the Yardbirds’ biggest hit ‘Heart Full Of Soul’. It announced the debut of a guitar genius that posterity would soon rank with Clapton, Page and Hendrix in the pantheon of rock guitar gods – not only for the 60s, but for the ages. The word “legend” doesn’t do Jeff Beck justice. In his long and fascinatingly erratic career, he covered many musical bases, his art ranging from viciously hard and heavy to transcendentally beautiful, everything perfectly played and straight from the heart. He was beyond amazing: “Jeff’s got notes on his guitar no one else has,” said Eric Clapton. Jeff Beck’s first and biggest successes are here on this album: blues-based precursors to the musical dimensions he would explore so satisfyingly for the following fifty years, yet still astounding, still thrilling.

Compiled by R&B and rock & roll authority Dave Penny, the 90-track 3CD set Voodoo Voodoo pays tribute to the distaff side of 1950s R&B music that would inform the rock ’n’ roll explosion of the latter half of the decade, from the last shout of the 1940s big band “thrushes” such as Ella Johnson and Dinah Washington, through the fearsome vocal power of the likes of R&B trailblazers such as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker and Big Mama Thornton, to the early experiments of the mainstream pop singers such as Ella Mae Morse, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee, Lillian Briggs and Jaye P. Morgan.

Jimmie Rodgers, not to be confused with the pioneering hillbilly country artist of the early '30s, was a hugely successful artist in the pop charts during the late '50s and early '60s, his work transcending the barriers between pop, country, folk and R&B to give him a succession of major hits on both sides of the Atlantic. He was one of the many successful artists to emerge from the influential Arthur Godfrey Talent Show on radio, and was one of the first artists signed to Maurice Levy's Roulette label in 1957. Working with ace producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore, he scored a No. 1 with his debut single Honeycomb and followed it up with Kisses Sweeter Than Wine, Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again and Secretly, benefitting from a supply of fine songs by the top team of Al Hoffman and Dick Manning. This collection comprises the A and B side of all his releases through to 1962, when he enjoyed his last Top 30 success with a UK No. 5 with English Country Garden. It's an enjoyable journey through the most important years of the career of an artist who successfully sat alongside the high-profile exponents of rock 'n' roll appealing to the middle ground of pop in the years before the British invasion.

It doesn't take much rhetorical muscle to argue that science fiction was one of the dominant genre artforms of the 20th century, from the Lumiere brothers to Spielberg, from Wells and Conan Doyle to Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke. This nearly exhaustive, lavishly packaged collection documents the genre's musical legacy across virtually every major genre on its five discs and 113 tracks. Each volume is divided by sub-genre–Movie Themes, TV Themes, Pop, Incidental/Lounge, Novelty–with each containing both the obvious contenders and some delightful surprises. But the profusely illustrated, hard-bound, 200-page book (designed to emulate the Big Little Books of the 1940s and '50s) that's included gives the subject its serious due, with an introduction by Ray Bradbury and contributions from an array of other notables, including Forrest J. Over 50 years after forming the group in Zurich, and 45 years after their break-up, Düde Dürst, drummer, band leader, graphic designer and archivist of the first Swiss “supergroup”, decided to take another stab at it. In the midst of working on a rerelease of Krokodil’s psychedelic masterpiece «An Invisible World Revealed» (1971) he couldn’t help himself but get inspired. His latest vision? Recording an album that unites Krokodil’s pioneering creative spirit with the zeitgeist of the 2020s. Together with the two founding members Walty Anselmo (guitar, sitar, vocals) and Terry Stevens (bass, vocals) as well as two younger and gifted musician friends, Adi Weyermann (guitar, vocals) and Erich Strebel (keys) Düde embarked on his latest, bold undertaking.

More than five deacdes have passed since Krokodil's debut album release. The band returns with an album and a different line-up. Since 2020 the Zurich band consists of Düde Dürst (founding member), Terry Stevens, Adi Weyermann and Erich Strebel. The band continues today where they started in 1969, composing their own style of music and rely on the power of the collective. With this album, the Swiss prog-rock band presents a versatile and excellently played powerhouse.

American Sea Shanties and Songs is part of Rounder's extensive Library of Congress compact disc reissue series. Originally released as part of the Folk Music of the United States series in 1952, it features 21 unaccompanied tracks sung by Richard Maitland, "Sailor Dad" Hunt, Noble B. Brown, and Capt. Leighton Robinson. These are shanties for purists, sung slowly – a sailor's work was never done in haste – and surely by the men who incorporated them into their everyday nautical routines. The tracks themselves are typical of the Lomax era, recorded in the field to capture all of the atmosphere and emotion generated by the physical workplace. All of the original illustrations, extensive research notes, and in-depth discussions of the genre and its colorful terms and characters are intact, and these, more so than the fascinating – but poorly recorded – songs, are reason enough to pick up this invaluable maritime resource.

Édouard Lassen never stopped composing. His copious oeuvre contains examples of almost every genre in favour in the second half of the 19th century, from piano pieces to operas, choral works, symphonic and concertante pieces. His international reputation was secured especially by his theatrical works. He also produced a regular and uninterrupted flow of over 260 songs from 1857 until his death in 1904. The small-scale song form was ideally suited to his temperament imbued with universalism, assuming a dual cultural heritage.

Compared to the Italian centres of power – Milan, Florence and Rome – the Lombardian city of Mantua in the Po Valley is small in size. All the more prestigious was the commitment to the arts by the ruling Gonzaga dynasty: artists such as Andrea Mantegna, Giulio Romano and Leon Battista Alberti created lasting master-pieces in their paintings and architecture for them, whilst musicians such as Giaches de Wert and Claudio Monteverdi consolidated Mantua’s reputation throughout Europe.

The Fourth is Sibelius's most difficult symphony. For some, it is his masterpiece. When the symphony was premiered on 3 April 1911 in Helsinki, one critic compared it to Barkbröd - tree bark eaten by the Finns in times of famine! It is fittingly a Finn, conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who explores this symphony that lays bare our emotions. With his Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, he continues his cycle of the complete Sibelius symphonies, with the addition of the famous Valse Triste and the symphonic poem inspired by Swedish folklore called The Wood Nymph.
