    The precise force with which Shoko Kuroe appropriated Der Elefant im Klavierzimmer (The Elephant in the Piano Room) thrilled me during numerous rehearsals. She feels, thinks, and plays in contexts and metaphors. Every piece she plays on this CD is a testimony to her deep understanding of my music. It’s remarkable how she bundles and almost intensifies some passages dramatically; particularly the virtuosic elements gain a direction and originality through such accumulations and large-scale phrasing. The metaphor “The Elephant in the Piano Room” is derived from “the elephant in the room” in Dostoevsky’s Demons. It’s about the vulnerability of dignity. That’s also why TRAUMA UND RÜCKGRAT begins brutally at a tempo of minim = 120.
