These two major French composers abound with evocations to nature, to poetry, and immerse us in a universe of ephemeral sound images.
Philippe Hersant was a teenager when, an apprentice pianist more familiar with Bach and the classics, he saw the doors open to a new repertoire with the Children's Corner and the dreamlike harmonies of a "Clair de lune" and a "Jeune girl with linen hair ”. Stunned by the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun which he did not understand much at first, he let Debussy's music surreptitiously invite itself into his own world and permeate his Éphémères.
Beyond the convergences of colors and subjects, Philippe Hersant plays with borrowings and influences without falling into imitation. Absorbing the pianistic writing of Debussy, he appreciates independent or fleeting basses, revives the effects of bells in “La mande”, but specifies the use of the pedals and avoids ambiguous indications of character. “Without my realizing it immediately,” says the composer, “I was permanently marked by the layering of the rhythms and textures of the Bells through the leaves. The treatment of polyphony gives Debussy an impression of space and a striking depth of field. Could this be the secret origin of the Éphémères, the start of the journey?
