A new recording of Paganini’s eccentric ‘diary of invention’ for guitar by a young Italian musician with a fast-growing reputation in both rock and classical genres.
Giacomo Carletti took up the guitar at the age of 13, initially playing electric. Impressed by his talent, the composer Edoardo Catemario encouraged Carletti to take up the classical guitar. He now makes his career as a busy recitalist with the classical instrument while keeping up his pop and rock connections by playing electric guitar in several bands.
As Carletti remarks in his booklet essay for his debut album on Brilliant Classics, the 43 Ghiribizzi by Paganini stand as a testament to his musical ingenuity and sense of fun. They present a showcase for his technical prowess but also reveal a lighter side to the virtuoso often caricatured as a dark and forbidding figure.

Giacomo Gotifredo Ferrari studied in Naples before finding esteem in the Parisian musical world of the late 1780s. Fleeing the Revolution he settled in London. His compositions divide equally between vocal and chamber music, but also include two piano concertos. His Four Duets for Piano and Harp reveal clearly the main features of his art: easy melodic grace founded on his studies with Paisiello, high musical quality, formal balance, and a veneration of Haydn and Mozart. Intended for professionals and amateurs alike, slow movements are expressive and rondos full of vigor. In this recording original instruments are used to do full justice to the period timbre of Ferrari’s dialogues between fortepiano and harp.

Spanish music reached a peak early in the 20th century, with Enrique Granados Goyescas numbered amongst the crowning masterpieces of its day. Infused with the innovations of Debussy and Ravel, and inspired by the colours and emotional depth of Goyas paintings and engravings, the Goyescas are like brilliant and psychologically elaborate improvisations filled with seductively ornamented harmonies.

The psychedelic rockers didn’t initially plan to make a pair of linked album. As frontman Stu Mackenzie explained in a statement, the original goal involved “the notes between the notes,” returning to the microtonal explorations they had first begun on 2017’s Flying Microtonal Banana. Then the quarantine compositions took on a life of their own.

Gioachino Rossini's opera L'Italiana in Algeri is one of the composer's best-known operas and has lost none of its rousing freshness and energy since its premiere in 1813. Saxophonist Pat Posey goes to extremes for his solo debut album, they/beast. Introducing the tubax - a German-invented, modified version of the contrabass saxophone - Pat plays deep, dark renditions of J.S. Bach's Cello Suite No. 3, Melodies for Saxophone by Philip Glass, Bach-inspired Mo'ingus by Brooklyn-based composer-saxophonist Shelley Washington, and Pat's own Hymn.

For the last 20 years Matt has been the keyboard player for Jamiroquai, co-writing most of the band’s output during that time and co-producing the last album “Automaton”. In-between working with the band he has recorded as a session player with numerous artists in many genres including Duffy, Ashanti, JP Cooper, Jax Jones, SG Lewis, Purple Disco Machine, Newton Falkner, Will Young and many more. Now Matt has released his debut solo record “With The Music” under the Splash Blue label, with a retro Jazz Funk feel.

Camille Bertault and David Helbock are two of the most jaw-droppingly talented members of the cohort of European jazz musicians currently in their mid-thirties. Their journeys in improvised music are always adventurous, playful and exciting. She is the new rising star of French vocal jazz. He, Austrian-born, is one of the most fascinating pianists on the scene. Their two personalities might appear to be polar opposites, yet Bertault’s live-wire humour and Helbock’s calm self-assuredness only appear to be different on the surface.
