The competition from Berlin sees Beethoven more as the forefather of modern orchestral language par excellence and relies on targeted pathos. But Herbert von Karajan's interpretation of the nine symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic from the sixties has long been a piece of recording history.

If one can speak of a recording that is 'classical' in the truest sense, then this is probably it: In complete contrast to his Beethoven cycles from the 70s and (especially) 80s, Herbert von Karajan conducted the nine symphonies in this first recording for the Gelblabel from 1963 without mannerisms and exaggerated romanticism. Of course, it also lacks the revolutionary element of a Scherchen or even a Leibowitz: this recording gets by without musical extremes (the 'indulgence' in sound typical of the conductor is of course there, but in moderation), which is why it is ideally suited as a point of reference and orientation in comparisons of interpretations. One of the great merits of this recording was the re-evaluation of the so-called 'small' symphonies 1, 2, 4 and 8, which until then had been underestimated and now stand on an equal footing with the incomparably more popular numbers 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9.
