For the follow-up to his debut Deutsche Grammophon album Journey East, a colourful collection of classical masterpieces and Balkan folk melodies, Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović strikes out in a new direction, exploring the roots of Western classical music and dedicated to works by Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Johann Christian.

Daniel Barenboim continues his acclaimed Elgar series with the landmark First Symphony. These new issues mark the first time that indefatigable maestro Barenboim has returned to recording Elgar’s symphonic works since the 1970s.

You can see what Philip Glass liked about the harp in his music. On one hand, it’s a close substitute for a piano, which is involved in the originals of all three of these transcriptions. The excerpts from The Hours (tracks 7-12) were transcribed from a piano version of the original Nicole Kidman film soundtrack score, and unsurprisingly Meijer said that of the three works, that one gave her the most trouble.

The title of this exceptional disc, “Night Music”, should not be taken to mean that the performances are in any way dark, mysterious, droopy, sluggish, or otherwise conventionally “nocturnal”. Rather, the term evokes its 18th century musical meaning: a time for fun, relaxation, parties, entertainment both indoors and out, and of course, romance. Indeed, “Romantic” is perhaps the best way to describe these virtuosic, impulsive, and extravagantly expressive performances by the inimitable Andrew Manze and his team of crack “authentic-instrument” players.

As the double-disc The Fragile unfurls, all of Nine Inch Nails' trademarks – gargantuan, processed guitars, ominous electro rhythms, near-ambient keyboards, Trent Reznor's shredded vocals and tortured words – are unveiled, all sounding pretty much how they did on The Downward Spiral. Upon closer inspection, there are new frills, yet these aren't apparent without digging – and what's on the surface isn't necessarily inviting, either. There is nothing as rhythmic or catchy as "Closer," nothing as jarring as the piano chorus of "March of the Pigs," no ballad as naked as "Hurt." When Reznor does try for something immediate and visceral, he sounds recycled.

Pretty Hate Machine established Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor as a creative yet commercial recording artist; his industrial tones managed to find a groove that attracted rather than repelled an audience. Reznor, however, wasn’t just some grinder-come-lately but a technologically astute musician who understood the dynamics of intense music and who was looking for new ways to express his inner rage. Broken is the 1992 EP that firmly established his reputation and set up the anticipation for his incredibly abrasive masterwork, 1994’s The Downward Spiral.

The Downward Spiral positioned Trent Reznor as industrial's own Phil Spector, painting detailed, layered soundscapes from a wide tonal palette. Not only did he fully integrated the crashing metal guitars of Broken, but several newfound elements – expanded song structures, odd time signatures, shifting arrangements filled with novel sounds, tremendous textural variety – can be traced to the influence of progressive rock.

Skid Row is the self-titled debut studio album by American heavy metal band Skid Row, released on January 24, 1989 by Atlantic Records. After being noticed by manager Doc McGhee, Skid Row signed with Atlantic and began recording its debut. The album was recorded in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin with producer Michael Wagener, and received favorable reviews upon its release.

Vladimir Ashkenazy collaborates with Esther Yoo in a new recording of Sibelius and Glazunov Violin Concertos with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Yoo first came to international attention in 2010 when, aged 16, she became the youngest prize-winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition. She made her London debut in 2014, performing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 under the late Lorin Maazel at Royal Festival Hall. That same year, she was a soloist on the Philharmonia’s South America tour under Ashkenazy.
