Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has gained international attention because of his mastery of this percussion instrument, a rare one in the jazz idiom, but one that he induces to speak in a beautiful array of musical colors and textures. On Same Time Twice, the Berklee graduate teams up with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Mark Turner, acoustic bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, all excellent leaders in their own right. But despite the giant-sized talent of this ensemble, there are no conflicts of jazz interests here, just splendid complementing and soloing and audacious improvising.

To hear many hard bop hard-liners tell it, all avant-garde jazz is nothing more than atonal screaming. The problem with such sweeping generalizations is that some avant-garde jazz is, in fact, quite musical. A perfect example is Dave Douglas' Convergence, an experimental, adventurous outing that incorporates everything from classical and chamber music to Jewish, Middle Eastern, and East European music.

Duran Duran Duran aka Ed Flis is in the middle of a resurgence. The US producer, who first made a name during the break core scene of the mid-00s, released his first album in seven years in 2017 and now he follows it with this EP on French label Tripalium. While "Terror City" borrows from break core's shattered, splintered percussion, it is more restrained, as he lays down a scuffled, wiry rhythm. There is another surprise on "Sinking About You"; Flis works eerie textures and upbeat chords around a stepping groove and the kind of gasping, growling bass that sounds like it was recycled from a Basic Channel record.

There is indeed a spirit that moves through Dave Douglas' first Brass Ecstasy recording: the late Lester Bowie. Bowie's Brass Fantasy group cut a few compelling albums that combined cover versions of all sorts of music – as well as originals – that were arranged for a brass orchestra. The most famous of these, The Great Pretender, is an obvious model for Douglas on this outing. The four brass players include Vincent Chancey on French horn, Luis Bonilla on trombone, Marcus Rojas playing the tuba, and Douglas, of course, on trumpet.

This release, Shimmering, is part of a twin set of the works of Ketil Bjornstad. The sister album, Images, is being released simultaneously, and they will also be released as a double set. Both albums were recorded by Ketil Bjornstad himself, on the same piano, but two years apart in two different studios. Solo piano holds an important place in the compositional work of Bjornstad. His piano albums often morph into an improvised recital. Some parts of the album will have completely improvised segments, and some will have musical fragments that have a profound meaning for Bjornstad. Shimmering consists of a concert which was held in the studio with a small audience of 40 people. Bjornstad states that the presence of the audience, as well as the timing of the recording session, had a great impact on the result.
