How did our ancestors survive the shift from trees to land? How did Homo sapiens evolve to dominate the planet? How did our ancestors hunt before they developed weapons? You’ll be amazed to learn, the answer lies in a remarkable ability we evolved far earlier than our powerful brains. Humans are nature’s perfect endurance runners, and our African ancestors could outrun all the animals in their environment. The Perfect Runner celebrates the modern love of long-distance running by exploring our evolutionary past as a species defined by its ability to run. Cambridge anthropologist and multiple Gemini-winning host Niobe Thompson takes a journey of personal discovery back in evolutionary time, in conversation with leading evolutionary biologists and immersed in non-Western cultures whose survival still depends on endurance running. From the highlands of Ethiopia, to the most remote place in Arctic Siberia, to the world’s toughest ultramarathon in the Canadian Rockies, this documentary weaves cutting-edge science with gripping adventure, and leaves the viewer with a new and inspiring understanding of our common evolutionary inheritance as nature’s supreme runners.
The talent of clarinet/sax player Luca Velotti has been widely recognized in the last thirty years, both as mainstream jazz virtuoso performing on international stages (side by side with names such as Scot Hamilton, Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern among many others) and stable sideman with Italian songwriter Paolo Conte. Velotti, who felt in love with the tradition of jazz during his teens, has always proposed his personal view of the classic language, carefully avoiding any sterile imitation. On this new record, where he alternates between clarinet, tenor sax and soprano sax, he is relying on the guitar colors of Michele Ariodante (who also sings on three tracks) and the rhythmic foundation of Gerardo Bartoccini on bass and Carlo Battist on drums to support his melodic explorations of eight standards and three originals…
In aviation history, there have been only 14 sole survivors of commercial air disasters, but for all of them surviving was just the beginning of their ordeal.
When the Second World War ended, the people of liberated Europe celebrated their freedom from Nazi tyranny. Their years of suffering had ended, but for millions of Germans, the end of the conflict opened a new and terrible chapter. The Savage Peace reveals the appalling violence meted out to the defeated, especially to those ethnic Germans who had lived peacefully for centuries in neighbouring countries. Using rare and unseen archive film, the documentary tells a harrowing story of vengeance against German civilians, which mirrored some of the worst cruelty of the Nazi occupiers during the years of war. The Savage Peace includes the unique testimony of eyewitnesses and victims, who recall the horrors with searing clarity, their memories undimmed 70 years after the events took place. This a story that has, until now, been untold amidst the justified celebration of an end to an unspeakable tyranny. But as the writer George Orwell said, the treatment of the defeated Germans was a terrible crime that has gone unpunished.
